Mental Health And Surfing: Dragon Tackles The Taboo

Dragon takes a big step forward and raises the conversation around mental health in surfing, bringing together Dragon surf team athletes from Australia and New Zealand for a team trip with a twist …

At New Zealand Surf Journal we don’t run advertorials. We’re 100 percent for the reader. But in this case, and with mental health issues forecast to challenge one in five New Zealanders this year (according to John Kirwan and the 2014/2015 New Zealand Health Survey), we reckon the work Dragon is doing to raise the conversation to the front is worthy.

If you saw our story on Andy Irons film Kissed by God, then you’ll know how important we feel this is to our surfing community.

Dragon’s Mental Team Trip features: Owen Wright, Adrian “Ace” Buchan, Barney Miller, our very own Kehu Butler, Caleb Tancred, Xavier Huxtable and Noah Stocca. Film and concept made possible thanks to Sam Webb from LIVIN, Mark Hudson, Tom Wright and the Surfing Australia HPC team.
